Set in the late 1970's, Author Kevin "Coach" Brown's novel From Ghetto to Greatness is a masterpiece of storytelling that grabs your attention from the very beginning. Once you are pulled into the protagonist's Jerome Green's world, you are whisked away with him through the perils of teenage drug addiction and living life with no parental guidance. You will be pulling for Jerome all the way. The plot is fresh and intriguing; as opposed to the trite storyline of "I sold drugs, I was in a gang, I went to jail, and now I want to save the world." The result of this brand new approach to urban literature is a book that is absolutly a must read for all. It's just a wonderful story that will inspire you. It will make you laugh and sometimes want to cry. Brown paints his characters brilliantly as they all come to life and have a cumulative effect on Jerome Green's unsure future. https//plus.google.com/u/0/112784885105448939871/

From Ghetto to Greatness Kevin Brown 9780578040868 Books Reviews
I recently purchased the book from ghetto to greatness, I originally got to read while on vacation. But once i started reading it, I found myself engulfed...
As one who grew up on the Westside of Long Beach during the 70's and 80's, I found this book an enjoyable throwback. Kevin's multiple accounts of Westside history are painted in perfect detail. From "I know he shame" to strobe speed adjustment turntables, quadraphonic sound, and Mercury Marquis, he describes the Westside lifestyle and the era from which he grew up in amazing accuracy. Great read!
" The 'Ghetto' as defined in this novel, relates to a culture rather than an actual place. It`s a mentality"
~ Coach Kevin Brown
In my own words I shall describe Coach Kevin`s infamous book, 'From Ghetto to Greatness' in the way as perceived by some of my own experiences that relates to much of the content in this book. This is a bittersweet story of a black youth growing up in California; this novel is packed with truth. In a Black Man`s own words his feelings spill out on paper as he recants the events of the Civil Rights movement, the activities of the Black Panther Party and the harsh treatment of young Black males in California back in the day 'pig' was a household term to describe a cop. In it he adds dashes of the flavor of music as different stages of his life are demarcated with the names of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Rick James, Shalamar, Atlantic Starr, Gap Band, Jody Whatley, Dianna Ross and of course many many others. It speaks about common struggles of childhood one that sticks out in my mind is 'favoritism' and sibling rivalry...It also speaks about the love of family, the pain of separation and tells in many accounts a testimony to God`s Greatness.
He speaks the truth in a profound way and as a Black man or Woman who picks up the Coaches book, he or she will in his or her mind see Coach Kevin as he picks up a 'mirror' and points it to the reader. I got so inspired by the read and I thank Coach Kevin for the suggestion that I do so and purchase the book...He has given so much of himself in every sentence written and to me after the read I feel as if I have known this man all of my life.
Finally, stages of childhood is what I witnessed; stages of childhood and the spring of Jerome Green`s life then finally his grand entrance into adulthood as God has strategically placed mentors in his life to shed that 'Ghetto Mentality.'
"In my life greatness is defined through inspiring others in my examples and deeds.'

Kevin Brown takes the reader on a journey of life choices and the consequences and benefits of those choices. From Ghetto to Greatness shows the limits we set upon ourselves by choosing to stay with the status quo of our surroundings and the fantastic opportunities available to everyone when we look inside ourselves and reach for our full potential. This is a great read for anyone who has ever felt stuck in a rut and found themselves struggling to break free of their circumstances. The overall message of this book shows no limits to race, age, geography, or social standing and proves that only we limit our own potential.
